I just got this info in an email from our zoo:
Sunset Zoo is pleased to announce that Susie, the 56-year old chimpanzee matriarch, delivered a healthy baby Wednesday, August 18, at 4:45 pm. Mother and baby are doing very well and have been under observation by trained volunteers and staff since the birth. Julian, Sunset Zoo’s sole male chimpanzee, is the father.
In the wild, chimpanzees live 40 – 45 years on average. Susie is the third oldest chimpanzee among Association of Zoos & Aquariums accredited zoos and has been under the medical care of the Kansas State University veterinary team since her pregnancy was confirmed.
“Susie was removed from birth control because of medical concerns. The feeling was that she was too old to get pregnant and while this was certainly unexpected, we’re very happy that both Susie and baby appear to be doing well”, said Scott Shoemaker, Sunset Zoo Director. “We’re glad K-State played such a vital role in a healthy pregnancy and invite people to come to Sunset Zoo and watch the baby grow.”

I don't know where to begin. Surely this is good news for the tourism industry of Manhattan. Susie did seem rather annoyed by all the attention the other chimp mom and baby have gotten the past 2 years, looks like she has one upped them. Don't want to think about what sort of birth control they had her on all those years...

Well, I hope the baby is okay. Do chimp chromosomes get sticky like ours over time? Did Megan and Anna call Guiness?
I guess that is what we will be doing tomorrow... making sure this makes the big book and going to check it out ourselves. Yep, that's as exciting as it gets for us while Sean is off golfing and playing poker. Well, I do get to catch up on Bachelor Pad too...
We will need to go to the zoo while we are there.
The chimps are going to be on Good Morning America on Sunday at 7am. We went and saw them this morning, super cute. Yes, we are suckers for baby animals.
The Bachelor Pad is a zoo in itself. Enjoy. I think I'd almost rather watch a past-her-prime monkey off her birth control than that show but it's a train wreck that can't be avoided.
I will be sure to set the dvr to catch this! Manhattan will be famous!
